Keeping Your Travel Adventures Alive at Home
For me, travel has always been about more than the destinations. It's about the memories my husband and I create together along the way. From road trips through California to climbing down a mountainside in Costa Rica to reach a hidden waterfall, wandering colorful markets in Mexico, or soaking up the sun in the Caribbean, each journey leaves us with stories that deserve to be remembered long after the suitcase is unpacked.
That's why we've found ways to bring those adventures home, turning them into everyday reminders of the joy we've shared.
Collect Keepsakes That Tell a Story
One of my favorite traditions is collecting magnets and Christmas ornaments from every destination. Instead of the fridge, I display my magnets on a special metal wall at home, paired with a scratch-off travel map, so every time I add a magnet, I also mark off another place we've explored. Together, they create a living, growing gallery of our journeys.
My ornaments, meanwhile, transform our holiday tree into a collection of travel memories. Each one represents a special moment: discovering that hidden waterfall in Costa Rica, the colors and energy of a bustling market in Mexico, the laid-back rhythm of island life in the Caribbean. Decorating the tree has become a tradition that lets us relive those adventures year after year.
There are other keepsakes worth considering, too. A handwoven textile, a ceramic dish, or a painting from a local artist can bring the spirit of a place into your home in a way that feels lived-in rather than staged. And the small things, like ticket stubs, boarding passes, and museum maps, are worth holding onto as well. They're easy to overlook in the moment, but they make wonderful additions to a scrapbook or shadow box later.
Our Travel Photo Wall
Our hallway at home is lined with photo frames, each one representing a trip Chris and I have taken together. Inside each frame are a few photos that highlight that specific journey, capturing the essence of the experience. On the matte, I've included the location and year of travel, so the wall becomes a timeline of our adventures. Walking down that hallway feels like strolling through our shared travel history, with every frame telling its own story.
My Travel Journal
I also keep a travel journal where I jot down highlights each day while traveling: meals, conversations, sights, and feelings. To make it even more visual, I use a small photo printer to print sticker-sized photos from our trips and tuck them alongside my notes. Those little snapshots document what we've done and bring the pages to life, turning the journal into a personal storybook of our adventures.
Share Our Stories
For me, sharing our travels is part of keeping them alive. Sometimes that means writing about them on the blog, other times it's posting photos on Instagram, or even just telling stories over dinner with friends. Chris and I have a tradition of looking back at past trips together, remembering the highlights and laughing about the unexpected moments. Sharing isn't just about documenting. It's about inspiring others to explore, and about reminding ourselves how much joy these journeys have brought into our lives.
More Ways to Relive the Journey
Beyond keepsakes, photos, and journals, there are other simple ways to keep travel memories alive at home. A short video montage of clips and photos from a trip, or a digital scrapbook built from your photos, can be just as meaningful as anything physical, and cloud albums organized by destination make it easy to revisit a trip on a whim.
Food is another one of my favorite ways back into a place. Cooking a dish we loved abroad, like fresh ceviche inspired by the Caribbean or tacos reminiscent of Mexico, and pairing it with music from that country, can make an ordinary Tuesday night feel like a small return trip. A themed dinner night with friends, built around the stories and dishes from a specific journey, tends to bring the whole experience back to life for everyone at the table.
Even scent can do it. Bringing home candles, incense, or essential oils from a destination gives you a way to trigger a memory almost instantly. Citrus can recall tropical Costa Rica, while warm spices might transport you back to Mexico.
Final Thought
From magnets on our wall and ornaments on our tree, to photo frames in the hallway and a journal filled with little printed snapshots, each keepsake brings us right back to the adventures Chris and I have shared.
At Everyday Explorers Travel, I believe the journey doesn't end when you return home. It continues every time you relive, share, and celebrate the memories you've made with the people you love.
And I'd love to know: how do you keep your own travel memories alive once you're home? Share your traditions in the comments or with me directly. Your ideas might inspire someone else's next adventure.
